Police in the former Soviet republic finally began a hunt for the wanted 31-year-old Jack Shepherd, pictured above, last week after being contacted by Interpol on Monday
Blundering Scotland Yard detectives have been accused of failing to act on information that fugitive speedboat killer Jack Shepherd fled to Georgia ten months ago.
Police in the former Soviet republic finally began a hunt for the wanted 31-year-old last week after being contacted by Interpol on Monday.
But Shepherd's wife told Metropolitan Police officers at least six months ago that he had fled to Georgia.
An investigation by The Mail on Sunday has also learnt that Shepherd, who failed to attend his Old Bailey trial for manslaughter, arrived in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital, on a Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul on March 21 last year.
He is believed to have travelled from Britain to Turkey a few days before. According to multiple sources, his passport was scanned at Tbilisi's international airport at 3.31am.
It is understood the passport has not been used since, suggesting that he is still in the country.
Shepherd fled last March to avoid standing trial over the death of Charlotte Brown, 24, who was killed when his defective speedboat crashed during a late-night drunken voyage on the River Thames. He was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence
Last night a police source in Georgia said: 'Our border controls are very strict. Every passport is scanned when people go in and out of the country. So we believe he is here.'
Shepherd fled last March to avoid standing trial over the death of Charlotte Brown, 24, who was killed when his defective speedboat crashed during a late-night drunken voyage on the River Thames. He was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence.
The website designer was jailed for six years in his absence last July after a jury found he was at fault for Miss Brown's death in December 2015.
A friend of Miss Brown's family last night said they are 'furious' about the delay in the Metropolitan Police and Interpol contacting the Georgian authorities.
'Charlotte's family cannot understand the reason for this delay. It's absolutely infuriating for them,' the friend said.
News of the blunder comes ahead of a meeting between Miss Brown's family and Home Secretary Sajid Javid on Tuesday.
It follows outrage over the grant of £100,000 in legal aid to fund Shepherd's appeal despite being on the run.
When he failed to appear for his Old Bailey trial, detectives told Miss Brown's family that they had questioned Shepherd's wife about his whereabouts and had been told that he had fled to Georgia.
Despite that, several sources in Georgia insist the first they knew of the claim was last week.
One official said: 'Until the Georgian side was contacted by Interpol on Monday, we had no information about this case.'
Officers have been frustrated to learn CCTV footage at Tbilisi airport is wiped after 25 days.
The Met declined to comment on the delay but in a statement said it 'continues to work closely with the CPS, National Crime Agency and other agencies such as Interpol'.
