New Pictures Uber Eats couriers are delivering McDonald’s meals to schools despite ban to tackle childhood obesity

UBER EATS couriers are ignoring anti-obesity rules to deliver McDonald’s to schools, it has emerged.

Through Uber’s couriers, children are able to trade their healthy school meals for Big Macs and fries delivered straight to the school gates.

The National Association of Head Teachers said: “This is undermining everything we’re trying to do on child obesity.

You’d like to think there’s some sort of moral obligation on behalf of McDonald’s or Uber to make sure whatever system they use works.”

The practice also violates Uber Eats’s deal with McDonald’s, who have said they are “extremely disappointed” with the food delivery giant.

Through Uber Eats’s deal, it has exclusive rights to deliver McDonald’s across the UK, the USA and Australia – provided it enforces the ban on delivering fast food to schools.

To enforce the ban, whenever a user places an order from McDonald’s, a message appears saying: “McDonald’s just want to let you know that we don’t order to schools.”

Couriers are also reminded not to deliver to schools when they pick up an order from McDonald’s.

Rogue couriers can still flout the rules, however, because the app does not monitor them or automatically block them from delivering to schools.

The practice was uncovered by The Sunday Times last week, when it ordered McDonald’s to Halley Academy, formerly Kidbrooke School in Greenwich.

The school became famous in the mid-2000s when it was the focus of Jamie Oliver’s campaign against unhealthy school dinners.

The Sunday Times also successfully ordered McDonald’s to the High School of Glasgow, as well as Wetherby Prep, an elite private school in London attended by both Prince William and Prince Harry.

A spokeswoman for McDonald’s said: “Since the launch of McDelivery with Uber Eats we have had a policy, which is made clear on the app, that deliveries to schools will not be fulfilled – and we have agreed with Uber Eats that they will enforce this policy on their platform.”

Uber Eats said: “As a result of the allegations, we are reminding couriers that orders from McDonald’s should not be delivered to schools under any circumstances.

“We are also working with McDonald’s to prevent this from happening again.”
