TRADE Secretary Liam Fox last night accused certain MPs of trying to “steal” the result of the referendum from the people.
Dr Fox said a section of pro-Remain MPs were trying to seize control of the process against the wishes of the public.
Speaking on the BBC’s Marr Show, he said: “You’ve got a Leave population and a Remain Parliament.
“Parliament has not got the right to hijack the Brexit process because Parliament said to the people of this country we make a contract with you, you will make the decision and we will honour it.
“What we are now getting is some of those who always absolutely opposed the result of the referendum trying to hijack Brexit and in fact steal the result from the people.”
And he warned of a disastrous effect if the 2016 result was not honoured.
He added: “The consequences politically would be astronomical”.
It came as Sir Anthony Seldon, the PM’s biographer and respected vice-chancellor of the University of Buckingham, suggested a way out of the Brexit deadlock.
He said Britain should leave the EU as per the PM’s deal in March.
But a fresh referendum in 3-5 years should then take place – after lengthy debate – in which the people could then decide whether to leave altogether with No Deal, Remain out on the PM’s terms or re-enter the EU.
The option with the least votes could be dropped and one week later another vote would be held with the two remaining choices.
