A FOUR-year-old boy was almost hit by a car after he was allowed to wander out of school alone and tried to cross a busy road.
His furious dad is demanding answers after teachers failed to notice the young boy as he left Forest Lodge Academy primary school, in New Parks, Leicester.
A driver said she had to “slam the brakes” to avoid running him over at the end of the school day at around 3pm on Thursday.
The boy’s dad, who wants to remain anonymous, said he felt “physically sick” that it was allowed to happen.
He voiced his fears that his son could have been abducted or mowed down by a car.
‘I WANT ANSWERS’
“It was at the end of the school day and when parents and guardians were collecting the children,” he told the Leicester Mercury.
“Somehow my son, who is only four, managed to walk out of the school past teachers and school staff.
“He wandered out of the door and out of the school gates.
“I want answers. I don’t know how he simply walked out.
“He could have been run over or abducted. And we’d have had no idea. It’s only luck that prevented it from turning out very differently.”
DRIVER ‘SLAMMED ON BRAKES’
The four-year-old boy crossed one road and was trying to cross Charnor Road, which is very busy at that time of day, when a woman picking up her child spotted him.
“She had to slam on her brakes to avoid hitting him and got out and grabbed him,” the dad said.
“The driver said she felt sick – I feel sick too that this was allowed to happen. It’s disgraceful.”
The boy was able to walk out during roll call at the end of the day.
SCHOOL APOLOGISES
The school has since apologised to the boy’s parents and said it is making “enforced, proactive improvements” to increase security and make sure it does not happen again.
Headteacher Claire Caldwell said: “An incident took place after school on Thursday that was resolved quickly and effectively – of which we immediately informed the mother of the child.
“Following this, and in line with good practice, we informed all necessary authorities and a full staff briefing was held where a thorough risk assessment and review of the relevant policies was completed.

“We have already made and enforced proactive improvements and processes moving forwards.”
She added: “A full face to face meeting was held with the mother where all of this was comprehensively outlined and acknowledged.
“As always, the safety of our whole school community is of paramount importance to us.”
