New Pictures Prince Philip, 97, test-drove £400,000 155mph Rolls-Royce at Sandringham just days before horror crash

PRINCE Philip roared around Sandringham in a new 155mph Rolls-Royce just days before his crash.

The Duke, 97, the Queen, and Princes Charles and Harry test-drove the £400,000 top of the range Rolls-Royce Cullinan, named after a diamond in the Crown Jewels.

The company lent the luxury 4×4 in the hope the Royals would lease one.

But the Queen is said to feel loyalty to Jaguar Range Rover.

A royal insider said the family “fell in love with” with the Rolls.

They added: “They think it’s fantastic.

“The problem is that the Queen feels loyalty to Jaguar Range Rover.

“Otherwise she would jump at the Rolls.”

My view

NOTHING – and I really mean nothing – screams wealth as much as the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Think seven star hotel with wheels and an engine more powerful than a space shuttle’s, and you’ll get the picture.

Decadent? Goes without saying.

Vulgar? Some might say so.

But Prince Philip and the Queen need a car which befits their status.

Despite being good for a top speed of 155mph, the Cullinan is not a driver’s car, it’s a car to be driven in, so it’s not ideal for 97-year-old Philip.

However, the royals would be able to help themselves to a can of Carling and a sausage roll on long trips, kept chilled by the built in fridge and served on the fold out cocktail table.

And of course, technically, it’s a SUV, so it can cope with off-roading. Peace of mind for those worried about keeping Philip safe if he insists on still driving.

The Cullinan has an aluminium space frame chassis, a version of the modular “Architecture of Luxury” platform used in recent Phantom VIII models.

It features self-levelling air suspension and electric active anti-roll bars.

A stereo camera in the front windscreen stands the road ahead and adjusts the suspension accordingly, a system dubbed the “Flagbearer,” while twin seats can extend electronically from the boot.

The source added: “All the royals, including Philip, were using it over Christmas and sampling all the gadgets.

“But for Philip, driving around Sandringham is a lot different to being out driving on public roads.

“The Queen is very impressed with the car it remains to be seen if she will reluctantly give it back!”
