New Pictures One of Britain’s fattest cats who tipped the scales at 16lbs is looking for a new home

One of Britain's fattest cats is looking for a new home - after being returned to an animal shelter for the fourth time.

Flabby feline Mitzi shocked vets when she tipped the scales at 16lbs - almost double her recommended weight.

She was forced onto a strict diet to shed the pounds but despite several attempts at finding her a home, she keeps getting sent back.

The shelter has now issued an appeal for help in finding her 'forever' home but accept her needs are challenging.

Staff at Woodside Animal Welfare Trust in Plymouth, Devon, said the constant to-ing and fro-ing is having a negative impact on the well-rounded girl.

She was originally taken to Woodside in May 2017 where volunteers at the charity thought she had been fed by students at different addresses.

Her indulgent lifestyle was quickly swapped for a slimming diet, and she managed to find a home pretty quickly.

But the gigantic feline, who is now around eight-years-old, was returned as her new owner struggled to cope.

She then found three other homes but was again unable to settle and kept ending up back at the shelter.

Mitzi is now down to her lowest weight of 12lbs, but Woodside's assistant manager Lisa Darcy said it can be harder for cats to shift weight when they're at the shelter.

She said: 'We're disappointed she hasn't quite managed to find that match yet but she is so well loved by staff here.

'We will continue to stand by her and help with her diet. She is still quite barrel looking but we are half way there [to get to a safe weight].

'She is a bit of a grumpy girl but with her weight loss and through gaining mobility that could change.

'She's getting a bit fed up of it [coming back]. She's like 'great, I'm back here again' and I think it is impacting her mentally as she can't ever feel completely settled here.

'She needs a child free home, and she's not keen on other animals either.

'We're looking for a particular type of home and an owner who can't be fooled by her cuteness or her eyes for Dreamies.

'We completely understand that circumstances change and we are grateful for [Mitzi's past owners] for trying.'

Anyone able to help can call Woodside on 01752 347503.
