FANS were turned away from full terraces at an FA Cup semi-final at Hillsborough eight years before the tragedy, a court heard.
The trial of ex-police chief David Duckenfield and Graham Mackrell was told there was similar overcrowding at a Spurs v Wolves game in 1981.
That was before Mackrell started work as Sheffield Wednesday club secretary.
Jason Beer QC, defending Mackrell, said the 1981 problems led to fans being refused entry and others being allowed on to the pitch during a crush.
He added: “The scene was already set for Mr Mackrell by the way this club developed in the ’70s and ’80s. Critical decisions as to the layout of ground, that would have a significant effect on how the (1989) crush occurred, had been taken.”
Ninety-six Liverpool fans died in the crush in 1989 during the Liverpool v Nottingham Forest match.
Mackrell, 69, of Buntingford, Herts, denies safety offences.
Match commander Duckenfield, 74, of Bournemouth, denies 95 counts of gross negligence manslaughter. The 96th victim died four years later — too late for laws of the time to apply.
The Preston crown court trial continues.
