He turned up at hospital with a severely swollen tummy.

Doctors treating him in Sri Lanka said their patient had put off seeking medical help due to “socioeconomic constraints”.

In a case report, they state: “The patient only presented when he developed absolute constipation with worsening abdominal distension (ballooning).

“He had no other features of bowel obstruction including associated vomiting or abdominal pain.”

After examining the man, the doctors noted he “was ill looking and in discomfort”.

He had a “grossly distended” abdomen, and signs of peritonitis – inflammation of the lining of the stomach.

Constipation was sign of rare illness

The man’s severe constipation was found to be a symptom of a rare condition – multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN).

The genetic condition causes non-cancerous tumours to grow in the mouth, eyes and endocrine glands.

Sufferers are also at greater risk of developing cancer of the adrenal glands.

Symptoms of MEN 2B – the type the patient in question was found to have – include a tall, thin body with elongated limbs, low muscle mass, constipation, delayed puberty and dry eyes or a lack of tears.

Surgeons operated on the patient, removing his entire large intestines.

They created an ileostomy – bringing the remaining parts of his small intestines out to an opening on his abdomen.

The doctors said he made a good recovery post-op, and was discharged without a problem.

Man with ‘megarectum’ almost dies after bowel fills with poo and BURST

Last year, doctors in London treated a 24-year-old man after he almost died when his bowel became so full of poo it burst, causing his organs to start shutting down.

The man had a history of chronic constipation and had been admitted to hospital several times over the previous four years.

A CT scan revealed he was suffering “megarectum” – a severe swelling of the colon and rectum.

His rectum had swollen by up to 18cm inside his body and was “filled with faeces”, according to another BMJ Case Report.

His operation was also successful and he made a full recovery after being treated in intensive care.
