For one of the world’s most photographed women (she’s appeared on 32 covers of British Vogue alone), Kate Moss has had some surprisingly unflattering moments in front of the camera.

In years past — especially after a hard night out — the party-loving supermodel has looked, well, just a little less super than some might expect.

But celebrating her 45th birthday this week with boyfriend Nikolai von Bismarck, the Croydon-born star looked a veritable vision of dewy good health.

She’s kicked the booze, taken up exercise and given sugar the boot. The result? A woman renewed.

So how has she done it? BETH HALE reveals the secrets of the new-look Kate . . .

HOW ‘THE TANK’ TURNED HER BACK ON THE BOOZE

If one thing has made the biggest difference to Kate’s rejuvenated appearance it’s giving up alcohol, which she has done without the need for rehab.

Where in her wilder days she might start the day with a glass of wine, followed by wine and vodka at lunch, earning her the nickname ‘The Tank’, she has now been dry since September 2017.

It was around this time that Donatella Versace reunited five of the original supermodels — not including Kate — for a catwalk show in Milan, in memory of her late brother, Gianni.

‘This really dented her self-confidence, but at the time she didn’t believe she could do it,’ says a fashion industry source. ‘Nor did she have the body for it.

‘Also she was told by Nikolai’s mother, Debbie, that her partying was killing her son! She gave up booze to keep her relationship with Nikolai.’

Her resolve was only strengthened when her close friend Annabelle Neilson, 49, died suddenly last year.

Her favourite way to spend the weekend now, she says, is in the country with her family and her dog — and at favourite haunts such as The Dorchester she favours sparkling water, Diet Coke or non-alcoholic ginger beer.

She also likes to get eight hours’ sleep. ‘I take care of myself now, I’m a good girl,’ she said last year.

‘I go to bed, I drink lots of water, not too much coffee, and I’m trying to cut down on cigarettes.’

ICY WATER AND A £950 MOISTURISER

Given the amount of time she has spent in front of a camera, Kate always appeared to have a laissez-faire attitude to looking after the tools of her trade.

Shunning regular exercise, soaking up the sun, fags and booze of course; hardly the best methods for maintaining a model physique. But at 45, she’s looking a decade younger.

‘I take care of my skin, which somehow has held up,’ she told Harper’s Bazaar magazine in November.

Having modelled for the cult Japanese beauty brand Decorte (she was recently made the firm’s creative director), Kate raves about its products.

In the past she would on occasion go to bed with her make-up still on, while her morning routine after a heavy night involved plunging her face into a bowl of icy water.

Now she admits that with age ‘there is more to hide’.

She still swears by the benefits of a freezing face wash, but also has facials with Nichola Joss, who counts the Duchess of Sussex among her clients.

Joss offers treatments including a Bespoke Sculpting Inner Facial, which costs £250 for an hour’s session and involves ‘massage from inside the mouth to de-stress the muscle tissue and improve the tone and firmness of the facial muscles to add youth and vitality’.

At home Kate maintains a simple, but pricey, daily skincare regime.

She uses Decorte’s Clean and Pure foam wash (£52) and Liposome Moisture Serum (£85), before smoothing on something called a Vitality Tincture (£140) together with a blob of AQ Meliority Intensive Cream (£950).

‘My skincare routine is really simple. I couldn’t be bothered with loads of products,’ she says. ‘Regardless of whether or not I’m working, I just do the same thing all the time.

‘I’ll do a cleanser and a serum and a moisturiser and that’s it. That’s all I need,’ she says.

SHUNNING SUGAR AND EATING SALAD

She insists she regrets her infamous declaration that ‘nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’.

Back in the 1990s, Kate was one of the original waifs. But in her mid-40s she now has the faintest hint of gentle curves. Maintaining a 26in waist, of course, takes work and the model has been known to dabble with an alkaline diet.

Followers are convinced that by not eating ‘acid-forming’ foods, such as meat and nuts, and feasting on ‘alkaline-forming’ ones such as fruit and vegetables, they can stay slim.

Kate attempted a vegan diet when she met ex-husband Jamie Hince, but that didn’t work out.

She gets advice from nutritionist Rosemary Ferguson and tries to do meat-free Mondays.

Since cutting out booze, she has also, sources say, tried to eliminate sugar from her diet.

‘She loved making jam at home in the Cotswolds and was famous for it. No longer. She rarely eats sugar,’ says an associate.

A fan of green juices, she has also started to eat salads.

SUPPLEMENTS TO STAY SUPPLE

With younger models snapping at her heels — not least her 16-year-old daughter, Lila — is it any wonder Kate’s reportedly a fan of anti-ageing supplement Lumity.

The latest trendy skin-booster in a bottle — or rather two, one for morning and one for evening — has fans in Yasmin Le Bon, Denise van Outen and Helena Christensen.

At £90 for a month’s supply, it isn’t cheap. But the regimen claims to treat the root causes of skin ageing. According to the brand, it has a ‘unique formulae of vitamins, minerals, omega-3 fatty acids and amino acids’ for ‘radiant and supple’ skin.

Kate’s also understood to have used supplements by nutritionist Gabriela Peacock, including a package called Fly Me, to combat travel fatigue. She has also tried IV vitamin drips to beat jet-lag, but ‘not often as she is squeamish about needles’, says a source.

TAKING TIPS FROM A MODEL DAUGHTER

When you are a supermodel, even one who has largely quit the catwalk, there are always folk to call on to keep you beautiful.

In Kate’s case, she has leading make-up artists such as Pat McGrath and Pernell Kusmus, not to mention Lila, her daughter with Jefferson Hack. ‘She teaches me everything,’ Kate told Harper’s Bazaar. ‘Lila and her friends follow all the beauty blogs, and she’ll be like: “Mum, you have to try this, it’s amazing what they can do now.”

‘She does all that contouring and stuff, which I’m sure they do to me when I’m at work, but I never pay any attention. I’m too busy talking.’

Kate has also tried facials with Knightsbridge-based Linda Meredith, famed for LED facials to increase the production of collagen and elastin.

As for her celebrated locks, Kate now entrusts her mane to stylist to the stars Nicola Clarke.

Having been carefully scrutinised by Mario Testino on her first shoot as a teenager, she now has a mirror in her dressing room that gives her a 360-degree view of herself when she is getting ready.

AND SHE STILL HAS THE MIDAS TOUCH

Kate has always been a smart operator, and appears to be increasingly aware of the need to establish herself in avenues away from the camera.

According to her most recent company accounts, she is again the UK’s highest-paid model, making nearly £9 million in 2017.

She continues to front lucrative advertising campaigns, and is a contributing editor for British Vogue magazine. She took the industry by surprise in 2016 when she left Storm Models after 27 years to set up her own agency.

She’s even started to DJ. Last summer she appeared in Mykonos, alongside friend Fat Tony Marnach, as part of their Fat Moss DJ partnership.

Last year also marked another notable event: her return to the Met Gala in New York (alleged drug-taking is thought to have caused some problems with getting a U.S. visa in the past).

Her Primrose Hill pals have sobered up, too

Ever the savvy businesswoman, Kate likes to be ‘relevant’ and that means keeping up with the crowd of younger faces snapping at her heels, Rita Ora, Cara Delevingne and the like.

But among her own long-standing circle of friends, there appears to be an unspoken new rule — not to get boozy around Kate.

New sober friends include DJs Jodie Harsh and Fat Tony Marnach (whose 12-year sobriety party she attended last week), David Furnish and Sir Elton John.

Of her old Primrose Hill set, Sadie Frost has also embraced a cleaner (though not teetotal) way of living and Meg Mathews has also quit the booze.

‘It used to be “if you don’t drink you’re out”, now it’s “if you do drink you are out”,’ says an associate.

 A Turkish Detox

The detox programme entails eliminating alcohol, caffeine, sugar, meat and dairy from one’s diet, while participating in daily meditation and yoga.

Old Kate would enjoy a week of partying with pals, and then roll up for detox, with more partying afterwards.

On returning from one trip she was thrown off an easyJet flight for swigging vodka from her cabin luggage after being refused alcohol, prompting her to call the pilot a ‘basic b****’.

Kate embarked on a relationship with Count Nikolai Von Bismarck, a descendant of Germany’s Iron Chancellor, Otto Von Bismarck, in 2015, following her split from husband Jamie Hince of rock band The Kills.

Despite the age gap — Von Bismarck is 32 — and a few storms, they remain a couple and apparently embarked on a booze-free regime together, although reports from a recent party suggest he may no longer be on the wagon.

And Kate’s not quite managed to quit the cigarettes, but is apparently trying.

 Her own wellnes Guru

In her catwalk prime, Kate was never an exercise fan and has a naturally slim physique.

‘She had a theory that if you exercise regularly, your body gets used to it and then you have to keep it up,’ says a fashion insider.

‘But now she’s exercising like never before and it makes a big difference.’ In an interview last year, she admitted she had joined a gym and lost an inch from her waist in 10 days and felt better for it.

She does yoga every day and has even converted the basement of her North London home into a yoga studio and Turkish steam room.

Kate is thought to have thrice-weekly sessions with yoga teacher Nadia Narain (right), a ‘wellness’ pioneer who has written a book titled Self-Care For The Real World.

Kate now has plenty of time for brisk walks with the dog — either near to her Highgate home, when in London, or in the Cotswolds when she retreats to the country.
