GREASE star Didi Conn has told how she burst into tears the first time she heard her son say “I love you” and she had to keep asking him to say it again.
While most mothers would say the same, for Didi it was all the more special because it was only a few weeks ago – and her son Danny is 26 years old.
Speaking to the Mirror, the Dancing On Ice contestant told how the emotional breakthrough came very recently.
For a young man with autism, Danny struggles to understand abstract ideas and emotions and is extremely sensitive to sound.
Didi said: “The first time Danny said, ‘I love you’ was this year.
“I was leaving to fly to the UK and he said it on the phone. I kept saying, ‘say it again, baby’. And he did. “Then he said, ‘why are you crying?’.
“So I told him they were happy tears. And oh my God, did I cry? It was the biggest milestone, it really was.
“Because I couldn’t really hold him as a baby, as he was so sensitive and didn’t like to be held, so that was tricky. It really was something special to hear.”
The actress, 67, took years out of her career to give round-the clock care to Danny, who was diagnosed aged three and has extreme sensitivity to sound and cannot be left alone.
It was only after Danny had been settled happily into life on a self-sustaining farm and school that Didi agreed to leave her New York home for her new Dancing on Ice role.
Supported by 24-hour carers, Danny is well looked after and Didi thinks about her son to help boost her confidence on the ice.
She said: “When I saw a film of my first dress rehearsal on the ice, I was upset because I didn’t look good and everybody else seemed to be much better skaters.
“I was feeling stressed so I meditated and what came to my mind was how accepting we are of Daniel and his limitations.
“You go into another time zone when you are a parent of an autistic child, where any micro movement in a positive direction is such a cause for celebration.
“That’s a gift, because children can grow so quickly and we don’t see every incremental change.”
Fans of Dancing On Ice have taken an instant shine to Didi and this stint on the ITV show could be the springboard to the second chapter of her career.
Despite younger contestants scoring higher marks, the star won’t let it get her down.
She said: “I have to give myself a break, put things in perspective and realise I am doing more than I did two months ago. I didn’t fall down.”
The actress, who has been married to composer David Shire for 37 years, is best known for her role as Frenchy in the iconic film Grease.
