New Pictures Cheltenham Festival: Colin Tizzard to send Thistlecrack straight to Gold Cup to give him best chance of landing Festival feature

THISTLECRACK will head straight to the Gold Cup with Colin Tizzard not wanting to risk his star picking up a problem.

After he missed most of 2017 and the second half of last season, the 11-year-old bounced back to form with his King George second last month.

Thistlecrack is a general 10-1 shot for the big race

Tizzard is likely to have defending champ Native River and Elegant Escape already headed to the Festival feature, but Thistlecrack is to be part of a three-pronged attack.

The Dorset-handler told Sun Racing: “Given his history of injuries and how he has picked them up, our best chance is going there without a run.

“He’s a lovely horse as we’ve always known and given the problems he’s had over the past season or two we just want to get him to the Gold Cup.”

Thistlecrack has tasted success at the Festival, when he took the 2016 then Grade 1 World Hurdle, but it is owner John Snook’s dream to win the Gold Cup.

Tizzard continued: “We’ve got to get him there first, that’s the main aim, but if we can we’ll go there fresh.

“He’s in lovely form at the moment, working well and I just can’t wait to run him again.”
