ARSENAL academy boss Per Mertesacker skipped tonight’s mini-derby with Tottenham… to watch the NBA game in London.
The Under-18s chief, 34, passed on the 5-2 extra-time victory to work as a pundit for German television station DAZN.
A host of Gunners stars including Hector Bellerin were present at the basketball showdown, but Mertesacker was a surprise guest.
Lucas Torreira, Calum Chambers and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were all present to watch the New York Knicks take on the Washington Wizards at the O2 Arena.
But Mertesacker was a surprise guest, given that his young Gunners had their FA Cup clash with Spurs of all teams tonight.
And for a while it looked as they he may have lived to regret the snub, as the sides were level at 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Fortunately for the giant German, Arsenal’s youngsters scored three in extra-time – thanks to Xavier Amaechi, Folarin Balogun and Bukayo Saka – to progress to the next round.
Mertesacker, a Cleveland Cavaliers fan, had earlier tweeted: “A highlight every year: The NBA London Game.
“For me the first time for @DAZN_DE as an expert. I’m looking forward to it!”
Mertesacker called time on his playing career in the summer and immediately took on the role of academy chief at the Emirates.
