New Pictures Jo Konta match latest start in Aussie Open history… because of seagull POO

JO KONTA became the Australian Open’s latest starter – because of seagull POO!

Britain’s No1 tennis star had to wait until 12.30am on Friday morning local time before she could begin her second-round defeat to Spaniard Garbine Muguruza.

They first had to wait until the end of Alexander Zverev’s five-set epic with Jeremy Chardy to finish.

However, plans to move the encounter were undermined by the amount of bird mess on Court 3 – and the lack of staff available to clean it up.

It means Konta versus Muguruza became the latest ever match to start at the Aussie Open, beating the record of 11.59pm set by Daria Gavrilova against Elise Mertens last year.

Sadly for the Brit, 27, it was also her last game at this year’s tournament as she crashed out after losing 6-4 6-7 7-5.

By the time two-time Grand Slam champ Muguruza struck the winning shot it was 3.12am.

That was still nowhere near the latest finish ever, which came in 2008 when Lleyton Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis played a five-set match that finished at 4.33am.

Muguruza, 25, will face Venus Williams in the next round.

Meanwhile, top seeds Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep advanced to third round.

Djokovic produced a clinical display to put away Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3 7-5 6-4 in a repeat of the 2008 final at Melbourne Park.

It was the 31-year-old Serb’s 16th consecutive win on the Grand Slam stage and he will next face Canadian youngster Denis Shapovalov.

Halep was cruising to victory over Sofia Kenin after leading by a set and a break but the American roared back to edge the second set in a tiebreak.

Despite going down a break in the decider, Halep kept her composure to prevail 6-3 6-7 6-4.

It is the first time since Wimbledon in 2009 that all of the women’s top eight seeds have reached the third round at a Grand Slam.
