New Pictures Wagner will go down as Huddersfield legend… but replacement must prepare for life in Championship

IT IS sad to see David Wagner’s remarkable, romantic journey at Huddersfield come to an end.

While they look likely to get relegated right now, the German will rightly go down as an all-time legend of the club.

He got the Yorkshire club promoted against all the odds in his first full season in England and it was so refreshing to see how he went about things.

Wagner brought in players – a fair few from his native Germany – who he knew were good but who had just lost their way a bit.

He created an unbelievable atmosphere throughout the whole club and from afar you could see it rising week in and week out.

They played with a ridiculous amount of energy – and that translated into the stands too.

If you speak to anyone in the game about Wagner they will tell you just how forward-thinking he is.

Coaches have said that he was another level, with his attention to detail like nothing some had seen.

I spoke to Wagner on the phone a few times and occasionally went into his office for a brief chat.

He was so open and you could talk to him for hours and hours.

And what struck me was just how humble he was – it was never about him, all the success was down to his players.

Staying up last season was fantastic but not scoring enough goals has left them where they are.

Anyone who comes out and says they are poor team is wrong and you very rarely come away thinking that they have been well beaten.

The Terriers have played well in a number of games but there downfall has come from losing eight games by just one goal.

They’ve also struggled at the John Smith’s stadium compared to last year – they are bottom of the league for home form whereas last season they picked up more home points than four other teams.

Despite that there is an argument that they have played better this season, it’s just that final piece of the jigsaw that has been missing.

The club now have two options.

They can give their new manager the support at the end of the transfer window to give staying up a real good go.

But things are looking bleak and a great escape seems highly unlikely, so they may decide on tasking the new manager with growing this team in the Championship.

In an ideal world you would want a like-for-like replacement for Wagner, but that’s unlikely, although current Dortmund U23 boss – the team Wagner previously coached – Jan Siewert is among the candidates.

Wagner has been a great addition to English football and I have no doubt he will continue to be a huge success wherever he goes next.
