A mother has complained that her vegetarian children are served Quorn at school every day, but Mumsnet users said it was up to her to provide variety
A woman whose vegetarian children are served Quorn for lunch every day at school has provoked a furious debate after she complained about lack of choice.
Speaking anonymously on British parenting site Mumsnet, the mother-of-two explained her children have been vegetarian since birth and rarely eat the processed meat substitute at home.
Acknowledging that she could give her children packed lunches instead of relying on the school's dinner, the mother outlined in her post that offering Quorn everyday doesn't offer children a balanced diet.
Some commenters said that she should 'allow them to eat meat' if she has a problem with lack of variety, or make their lunch at home.
However, others agreed that it's not fair to give them the processed meat substitute on a daily basis.

In an anonymous post the mother outlined that her children's school offers Quorn most days as the only vegetarian option
'You wouldn't tolerate processed chicken everyday for meat eaters so why should vegetarians deal with it. Yes, it's a lifestyle choice, but it's a lifestyle choice that benefits animals, the environment and is healthier.
'Someone also mentioned that school lunch is often the only decent meal children get in a day due to poverty... All the more reason to make it nutritious and balanced! A vegetarian diet is cheaper after all!'
Another wrote: 'It's a lazy option. Some people get stomach ache with Quorn. Not hard to do a veg chilli or Bolognese or even a jacket spud.'
But others mocked her lifestyle choice and told the mother to allow her children to eat meat in order to have a wider range of options.
A flood of responses to the thread slammed the school and declared Quorn is an unhealthy substitute for balanced diets
One person said: 'They are perfectly free to try the chicken option, but they would be horrified at the idea. In their opinion chickens are their friends, no different to them than someone suggest eating their pet hamster or grandma's dog.
Another added: 'Well you've chosen to make them vegetarian so you can't really complain. If you want them to eat better allow them to eat meat, they won't have to eat Quorn at all then.
A user speaking under then handle 'Nesssie', argued the mother is being unreasonable as the children aren't eating exactly the same food each day.
'They are having the same meals as everyone else (hotpot, bolognese etc. just subsitutuing meat for a meat alternative.
'If the meat dishes were as above, and the veg option was always Quorn and chips, then you could say something. But as they are getting a different meal everyday then you are being unreasonable.'
Other contributors to the thread mocked the mother for complaining and argued the children should eat meat instead of expecting the school to cater for their lifestyle choice
