New Pictures Man in hospital after stabbing near Kew Gardens

A man was stabbed with an 'enormous knife' in Kew in what locals described as an attempted car theft this morning.

The victim, who is in his 50s, was knifed near Kew Gardens Underground station in the upscale London suburb just before 8am this morning.

Witnesses said the man was attacked on the way to his car after buying a coffee, leaving the street covered in blood.

The man was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition after the stabbing, police said.

One shop owner said: 'The chap had bought a coffee and he walked around the corner, then someone heard screaming and he came stumbling back just past our shop and into the coffee shop.

'The police lifted a car and took a car away.

'It doesn't seem obvious for something like this to happen at eight in the morning in Kew Gardens. It just looks like an opportunist who has gone for the car. '

Staff at the coffee shop helped the victim and called an ambulance after the attack, witnesses said.

Another witness said 'it looked like they were trying to steal his car'.

A local resident told My London that there was a 'kitchen knife in the middle of the road and blood'.

Yet another witness said: 'Horrific stabbing this morning outside Torellis [coffee shop] - thoughts with the victim.

'Enormous knife. Not what you expect in Kew on a sleepy Sunday morning. Stay safe all.'

Another witness said on Twitter: 'Drove past, it looks very serious indeed! Our thoughts go out to the victim and their family.'

Police have cordoned off the scene on the corner of the street as forensic investigators gather evidence.

The cordon is in place just five minutes' walk from the gates of the world-famous botanical gardens.

A Met Police spokesman said: 'Police were called to Royal Parade, Kew at 0754hrs to reports of a male having been stabbed.

'He is being treated in hospital for injuries not thought to be life threatening. No arrests made and enquiries continue.

The investigation is being conducted by Richmond CID.
