A 38-year-old man has been charged with flying a drone near Heathrow Airport days after a scare at Gatwick grounded more than 1,000 flights.
George Rusu allegedly used a drone on a field near the runway at Heathrow, Britain’s busiest airport, on Christmas Eve.
The alleged incident happened just three days after Gatwick fully reopened on December 21 following three days of chaos affecting some 140,000 passengers.
Rusu, from Hillingdon, will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
He is charged with flying a “small unmanned aircraft without permission of air traffic control”, according to court documents.
Drones nearly hit passenger planes 18 times in just three months, including one which came within 70ft of a jet.
The terrifying incident saw “a large commercial drone” skim close to an 850-seater Airbus A380 as it came into land.

The near misses in just three months last year were among incidents which prompted Heathrow and Gatwick to install drone-busting tech.
It was announced earlier this month the government will ban flying a drone within three miles of an airport, in a safety crackdown.
The move came after Gatwick airport was thrown into chaos just before Christmas after suspect drones were spotted flying around the airport causing severe disruption.
