New Pictures John Barrowman fires back at a 'homophobic' man who called him a 'poof' in a VERY heated exchange

John Barrowman got into a tense, heated exchange with a homophobic man who insulted him with an anti-gay slur while he was hosting an awards show.

The Torchwood star, 51, was presenting the Globe Travel Awards 2019 on Thursday when a man in the audience called him a 'poof'.

The exchange, recorded on John's Instagram account, saw him respond to the man by saying 'we don't say that anymore.'

The man replied: 'Oh, no way,' prompting John to quip back: 'No, we don't.'

The actor, who had a microphone on, then turned to the rest of the audience and said: 'He just called me a poof. That wasn't right.'

A woman standing near John can then be heard saying:  'OK, let's move on.'

John can be seen telling the man that what he said was unacceptable.

He said: 'Sir, I suggest you stop drinking because that was rude and I take offense at you calling me a poof. You can f**k off. A*****e.'

Members of the crowd can be heard cheering for John before he added: 'That was on Instagram Live so you've just made a complete a**e of yourself, you w****r.'

During a previous appearance on Loose Women, John revealed he was once not given a job on a US show because he refused to hide the fact that he is gay.

The show was a soap called Central Park West that ran from 1995 to 1996 with John telling how the producers asked him not to mention his then boyfriend Scott Gill, who he has since married.

John said: 'The producers pulled me into the office and sat me down – one was gay – and said they didn’t want me to talk about my boyfriend at the time, Scott, who I eventually married.

'In a nutshell, they asked me to go back into the closet, and I went back to Scott and said, ‘I can’t do that’.

'For years I’d wanted to be myself and hid being gay for a period of time, and been bullied for certain things, so I said no and I just lived my life.

'My character was written out of the TV show, and sent off to South America to get a facelift and came back as somebody else but the show was cancelled, so...'

The TV star took part in the 2018 series of I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! where he reached the final with Emily Atack and winner Harry Redknapp.

During an appearance on This Morning, the actor opened up about his time on the series, discussing how the camp mates avoided coming to blows with each other during stressful times.

He said: 'I enjoyed every second of it, and it was a challenge. That was the one thing – the decision to go in was to challenge myself and take myself out of my comfort zone.

'And I certainly did that. And the fact that everybody got along and we had a great time – there were times that things could have gone the other way, [but] we all established in the very beginning... We thought, "Let's have a word".'
