THE BuzzFeed UK editor has QUIT in the latest setback for the website following a £19million loss last year.

Janine Gibson, who led the company’s British expansion, today said she’d be stepping down after three years in the top job.

Her departure comes amid growing concern about the challenging financial conditions affecting advertising-supported online media companies.

It was recently exacerbated when BuzzFeed founder Jonah Peretti told the New York Times that it made sense for five or six of the largest players in the space to merge.

BuzzFeed is one of a number of online outlets that rose to prominence in the early part of the decade after targeting millennials.

But it’s now plagued with the same challenges traditional media companies have faced.

The UK newsroom saw an exodus of talent following 23 editorial redundancies.

Gibson will leave at the end of January, though it is unclear who will replace her or what her next appointment is.

An announcement on who will succeed her in the UK office is expected by the end of the month.

In a message to staff this afternoon, Buzzfeed editor-in-chief Ben Smith said: “We’ll miss her personally and as an organisation but I’m also confident that she leaves our British news operation with extraordinary momentum at this wild time.”
