New Pictures Police arrest teenager, 18, over murder of moped rider Jaden Moodie, 14

Detectives investigating the murder of Jaden Moodie in Leyton have made an arrest with police 'fully focused' on capturing the culprits who remain at large.

An 18-year-old man was arrested this morning at an address in Wembley, north west London on suspicion of the murder.

He has been taken to a central London police station where he remains for questioning.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Soole, from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command, who leads the investigation, said: 'Although one man has been arrested in connection with this murder, we remain fully focused on locating and arresting others connected to this deadly attack.

He added that 'a number of active enquires are in hand' and urged people to forget their reservations about talking to police, and come forward.  #

'My team are ready to take your calls,' he said.

Police revealed they are especially keen on information relating to the black Mercedes that was involved and added that the youngster's family are aware of the arrest.

'Jaden's family are being fully supported and kept updated by our team. This is a truly heartbreaking time for them and we are doing everything we can to find out who was responsible for Jaden's death.'

Speaking last week from his home in Jamaica, Julian Moodie - Jaden's father - was adamant his son's death was a case of mistaken identity.

He said Jaden was a ‘helpful and loving person and not violent’, and that there was never any inclination that he was into ‘wrongdoing’.

‘I was on the phone with him the Friday before it happened and I said to him: “All I want you to do is stay out of trouble and make something of your life.”’

Julian Moodie was out shopping when the devastating news arrived, via a phone call, just minutes after 14-year-old Jaden was knocked from his moped by a car on an East London street and stabbed in the back seven times by a gang of men.

‘Then the pictures came through on my phone,’ says 51-year-old Mr Moodie. ‘And then I passed out. I couldn’t believe it.'

Jayden was described as a 'kind' and 'sweet' boy who dreamed of being a boxer and emulating his hero Anthony Joshua, who had posed in a recent picture with him.

Police added today: 'We have a number of enquiries that we are pursuing, however, we cannot solve this alone, we need the public to help us.

'Due to the location and time of the attack we know there are a number of people out there who either witnessed the incident or who have information about this heinous crime and we would like to hear from them.

'I firmly believe that someone out there knows the people who are responsible for Jaden's murder.'

The London borough Waltham Forest where he died is notorious for gang-related violence and the rival Beaumont Crew [BC] and the Oliver Close Gang [OCG] gangs have fought to control drugs and prostitution rings in the area for almost 20 years.

Schoolboy Jayden had recently been photographed clutching bundles of £20 and £50 notes, making 'gang signs' on his moped and calling himself a ‘trapper boy’ - street slang for a drug courier.

In a heartfelt tribute to him his family insisted he had 'no affiliation with any gang' and been 'brutally murdered in cold blood'.

A family spokesman said at the time of the murder that the keen boxer had been 'brutally murdered in cold blood' but denied he had any links to gangs.

He said: 'Jayden was someone who had so many hopes and dreams. He had a keen interest in all things on bikes and loved learning how to fix them.

'He also loved sport and was due to start at a boxing club later this month. His character was infectious and everyone who met him fell in love with his charm.

'He had a huge heart and would do anything for anyone, especially his family. He will be sincerely missed.'

Police are still investigating if the 14-year-old, who had talked to friends about dying young, was assassinated as part of a bitter drugs turf war in Leyton, north-east London.

Jaden was murdered in Bickley Road, Leyton, a few hundred yards from the estate where the Beaumont gang take their name and has been their base.

Detectives believe there were five males in the car that collided with Jaden. Three of these males then got out of the car and stabbed Jaden before returning to the car and driving off. Enquiries are into their whereabouts ongoing, said police.

Jaden, 14, was declared dead by paramedics just after 7pm on Tuesday, 8 January following an incident in Bickley Road in east London.

He had been struck by a car and then fatally stabbed shortly before 6.30pm in what police are treating as a targeted attack.

The vehicle, a black Mercedes B Class, was found in the Carlisle Road area on Wednesday 9 January, and was removed for further forensic examination.

Detective Chief Superintendent Richard Tucker, the Commander of the area, said: 'This was a shocking, brutal attack on a 14-year-old child in the most audacious manner in the middle of the street.

'I completely understand the alarm and concern it has raised from those who live and work in the area.

'Neighbourhood patrols have been stepped up in the area and hopefully this has offered reassurance.'

No arrests have been made at this stage in the investigation. Enquiries continue.

'If there are people on our streets capable of killing a 14-year-old child, then no-one is safe': Jayden Moodie's family insist he wasn't linked to gangs and was 'murdered in cold blood'

The family of Jayden Moodie paid tribute to the teenager soon after he was brutally killed, as they urged witnesses to come forward to secure 'justice' for the death of youngster.

Standing alongside the teen's mother Jada, a family spokesman said the keen boxer had been 'brutally murdered in cold blood' but denied he had any links to gangs.

Jayden was a 14-year-old minor who had his whole life ahead of him which should never have been viciously taken from him.'

The family spokesman also denied Jayden had anything to do with gangs despite police investigating whether the murder was part of a turf war in Leyton, north east London.

He added: 'It was very distressing that the majority of reports about Jayden have mentioned London gangs.

'I would like to stress that Jayden had recently moved from Nottingham to London and had absolutely no affiliation with gangs.

'The focus needs to be on the fact he has been brutally murdered in cold blood and deserves a fair chance at justice as much as anyone else in this situation.

'If there are people in our streets that are capable of killing a 14-year-old child then no one is safe and they need to be caught and brought to justice.

'Help us get justice for Jayden as no one deserves to die in that horrific way.'

Battleground London: Street by street, map reveals the territories of the capital's gangs as violence spirals

This detailed map lays bare how at least 70 gangs are locked in bitter fights for control of London's streets.

More than 100 people have been killed in the capital already this year, with fears gang rivalries and feuds are leading to spiralling numbers of shootings and stabbings.

Maps circulated online have now attempted to plot the extent of each gang's fiefdom and flash-point roads where two territories rub up against each other.

The map shows there are at least 30 gangs in south London, the most notorious of which are Moscow17 in Kennington, the Ghetto Boys in Deptford and the Woolwich Boys on the banks of the Thames.

Another 30 gangs are stretched across the west, north and east, from Southall in the west, to Barking in the east.

While smaller outfits battle to control just a few roads to sell drugs, extort protection money or control prostitution.
