AN abusive dad stabbed his girlfriend to death after she refused to take part in a threesome, a court heard yesterday.
Ian Kettlewell, 30, had been with Kelly Franklin, 29, since they were teenagers but they had a rocky, on-off relationship.
He rarely helped around the house and spent his days drinking, playing computer games and trying to persuade Kelly to have sex with other women, the jury was told.
Prosecutor Jamie Hill QC said: “He did little or nothing to help with the children and rather chose to his spend his life surrounded by expensive computer equipment, drinking and gaming and trying to draw Kelly into his sexual fantasies involving other women.
“His obsession with sex led him to try and persuade Kelly to get involved in sexual activity with him and other woman. She was resistant to this.”
Their troubled, 12-year relationship resulted in social services getting involved over fears their three children, aged 2 to 10, were being neglected, Teesside crown heard.
Kettlewell moved out in an apparent bid to con social workers that they had split so Kelly could get the children back, it was said.
But they were taken away permanently when he accidentally shot one in the face with a high- powered air gun while he was cleaning it.
He started a new relationship with Julie Wass, 48, an old friend and neighbour but remained obsessed with Kelly.
He bombarded her with texts and used Wass’s Facebook account to send abusive messages apparently from her, the jury heard.
Kettlewell, who changed his first name by deed poll to Torbjorn because of his obsession with a video game character, began to fear that Kelly would never take him back.
Prosecutor Mr Hill said: “He was angry with Kelly because she was moving on in her life and trying to break free from his abusive intentions.
“We say this is a terrible case of a defendant who decides that if I can’t have her then nobody will.”
On August 3 last year Wass drove him to Kelly’s house in Hartlepool, Teesside, to confront her, it was said. She wasn’t in but he found her shortly after at a nearby bus stop.
Mr Hill said: “Kettlewell assaulted her. Kelly suffered more than 30 stab wounds, many to her neck and body.
“Some pierced her heart and lungs. The power of the blows broke several ribs and major arteries were severed.
“She rapidly collapsed and died, she suffered a catastrophic loss of blood. It was witnessed by several people. It was just after 9pm on an August evening, it was broad day light.
“Members of the public who witnessed the horrific attack were understandably too shocked to intervene.”
Wass was parked nearby and drove Kettlewell to pre-arranged hiding place in nearby woods, it was said.
She returned to the scene where she was interviewed by a police officer as an apparent witness.
The interview was recorded on his bodycam and the footage was played to the jury yesterday.
She was heard to say: “He has just cracked up, he has had his kids taken off him. I seen him with a knife and just stabbing her loads of times When she fell on the floor I seen him still stabbing her.”

She was later arrested and accused of being part of the murder plan.
Kettlewell, of Hartlepool, admits stabbing Kelly but denies murder, claiming he can’t remember what happened during the incident. Wass, of Hartlepool, has admitted assisting an offender but denies murder.
The trial continues.
