Sainsbury's is under fire for stocking addictive vaping products on open shelves near the health and beauty aisle.

Vaping liquids and e-cigarettes are usually sold behind manned counters in a similar way to tobacco products.

A spokesman for the supermarket chain said the move was to site vaping products by smoking cessation aids such as nicotine patches.

But Tory MP Bob Blackman, chair of the Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health, said: ‘It’s wrong to have them on open shelves.’

The change could make e-cigarettes and vaping liquid, which contains nicotine, more accessible to youngsters, he added, and give the impression vaping was harmless.

‘We don’t know enough about the long-term effects of electronic cigarette use. There may well be dangerous chemicals in the e-liquid,’ Mr Blackman said.

Sainsbury’s said: ‘Vaping products are for smokers looking for an alternative to cigarettes. A natural home for them is next to smoking cessation products.’
